Brainwash yourself

You run on autopilot most of the time. By 35, 90-95% of your thoughts and actions are repeats of the day before. We revert to coping mechanisms, relive past trauma, seek comfort in familiarity etc. In short, change is hard and requires you to consciously thoughts and habits that go primarily unconscious.

Due to our advanced neocortex, we can turn on the stress response just by thought alone. You'll probably have felt anxious over a hypothetical (some of us more than others :)). Anxiety, 'fight or flight,' or eustress is fine and even necessary, for survival - it helps you escape danger. Stress can be adaptive and is often necessary to improve and level up; think of breaking down muscle tissue, stimulating it to reinforce stronger upon repair. However, unavoidable, chronic stress has been proven to cause long term damage throughout the body. This type of stress may come from going to a job you hate every day, or as mentioned, as a result of negative thought patterns and overthinking. From this, we can make an important deduction - our thoughts can make us sick.

A habit is an automatic thought, behaviour or emotion. You've done something so many times that your body knows how to do without instruction from the mind - It's a program. We all want to be more productive or start a fitness regime, but the problem is that our bodies are on a whole different wavelength. As soon as you attempt to make change, it feels uncomfortable and after a few repetitions we settle back in our old ways. Interestingly though, a sudden death in the family may make us realize that life is short, or a health diagnosis inspires us to get healthy. This intense emotional experience can force us to bring unconscious thought or behaviour patterns into the conscious mind, where we can address them.

We want to be able to achieve this change absent a life changing traumatic event.

Meditation is one way we can do this - it helps us train our body and refrain from distraction, putting the mind back in control. This can be an extremely liberating experience.
